An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck off the coast of the southern Japanese island of Kyushu early Saturday, causing damage to roads and buildings, public broadcaster NHK reported. The radio said that minor injuries were reported in five counties close to the epicenter of the quake. NHK said a few roads in southern Oita and Miyazaki were closed early Saturday morning after being damaged by rockfalls, fallen trees and burst water pipes. The areas experienced a shaking of +5 on the Japan intensity scale during the earthquake.
In a statement issued last night, the agency warned of the increased risks of rockfalls and landslides in areas that experienced strong tremors. It also urged residents to prepare for the possibility of an earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 5 or higher on the Japan scale in the next few days.
The quake occurred at 1:08 a.m. off the southern coast of Japan at a depth of 45 kilometers (28 miles), but there were no indications that it would trigger a tsunami, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The earthquake magnitude was revised upwards from an initial measurement of 6.4.
Some areas near the epicenter lost power overnight, but the nearby Sendai and Jinkai nuclear power plants were operating normally, according to Kyushu Electric Power Corporation. Train operator JR Kyushu suspended some lines in Oita and Miyazaki prefectures on Saturday.
