Manchester United have confirmed the £2.6m loan signing of Burnley’s Wott Wieghorst, and the jubilant striker has described his move as a “privilege”.
United will cover all the wages of the Dutchman, who was on loan to Besiktas from Burnley. The Lancashire club will pay a €2.825m cancellation fee to the Besiktas team as Weghorst joined them throughout the 2022-23 season. United have no option or obligation to purchase the player.
Weghorst said: “I feel proud to be joining Manchester United. I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s great to now have the opportunity to don the famous red shirt. I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start my role in pushing the team towards its goals. .
“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything for the club as long as I am here. I thank everyone who played a part in getting me to this point, and now I look forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved immediately.”
John Murtaugh, United’s director of football, said: “Wout has a consistent goalscoring record in several European competitions and his attributes will add an extra dimension to our squad for the remainder of the season. We were also drawn to his strong personality and dedicated approach to football, which fits perfectly with the spirit in which Eric builds it within our team. He has shown a great desire to join Manchester United and be part of what we strive for this season.”
In 20 Premier League games last season Burnley Wighurst scored twice. Added by Ten Hag to strengthen and diversify his offensive options, the 6-foot-6 forward offers a different dimension.
While Marcus Rashford is the top scorer with 15 goals, Anthony Martial, his other frontline striker, has only managed five goals and is still plagued by injuries. The Frenchman faces a late fitness test ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime derby meeting with Manchester City at Old Trafford.
