Five great things coming soon from Castelli, Specialized, Fizik, Proviz and Polar

This week’s collection of 5 Cool Things is full of wearables, but by no means did we leave the tech side out of it! We’re taking a look at some of the Castelli jackets and Specialized jackets, both of which are must-haves to excel in UK winter conditions. And speaking of winter riding, we also had the Fizik Tempo Artica GTX boots, Proviz gloves, and Polar in optical heart rate monitor for testing. The latter is waterproof, so you won’t break it out on a few soaking rides, or if you’re swimming with it.

Castelli Flight Jacket Air

The Flight Jacket Air by Castelli comes with a bunch of pretty impressive claims, and the name itself might lead you to believe it’ll get you flying. A must-have for high-intensity riding or staying just the right temperature in cool conditions (6 to 15°C, to be exact), this nice-looking garment is a must-have for it’s “lightest, fastest, most breathable jacket”—so Really, perfect for what a UK winter it is.

The figure-hugging jacket features Polartec Alpha insulation, a water-repellent shell, three back pockets and reflective details, all of which will make your winter excursion outside even more enjoyable.

Proviz Reflect360 Waterproof Cycling Gloves

Proviz is known for its professional-level visible apparel, and these gloves are not only 100% reflective, but also feature a waterproof outer shell “Hipora Kori” to keep your hands warm, visible, and dry.

The palm of the glove has a silicone grip and some padding, and you should be able to use your phone with these gloves on. And for a stuffy nose, the Proviz Reflect360 Waterproof Cycling Gloves also include a nose wipe (a soft cloth on the thumb). What do you not like?

Polar Verity Sense optical heart rate sensor

Polar Verity Sense is an optical heart rate monitor, which means it measures your pulse by changes in the size of blood vessels that occur when the heart pumps blood. The frequency changes (your pulse) is then detected by an optical sensor and a green LED.

This specific sensor fits around your arm, measuring 23-32cm in diameter and Polar says this allows for maximum freedom of movement and multiple options for viewing and logging your exercise. The device comes with Bluetooth, ANT+, and internal memory, and you can connect the screen to a watch or a sports app to see your stats in real time or view your data afterwards.

You can use the sensor for 30 hours on a single charge, and it’s waterproof so you can take it to swimming sessions (or very wet bike rides), too.

The Specialist RBX Women’s Softshell Jacket

Let’s be honest, most of the UK doesn’t get frequent sub-zero temperatures and snow, which means the majority of our winter travel takes place in what some call the ‘shoulder season’. Softshell cycling jackets are a top choice for riding in these not-so-cold but wet and windy conditions and the Specialized Women’s RBX Softshell Jacket promises to deliver warmth and comfort.

It’s stretchy, wind and water resistant, and features enough pockets in the back to store other riding essentials and, most importantly, snacks.

Fizik Tempo Artica GTX shoes

Fizik’s Tempo Artica GTX range, launched late last year, has been, I think, one of the most exciting cycling shoe launches for a while. The Artica was released in an on- and off-road version, and while the bold colors of the two-bolt model are very nice in brightening up a gloomy day, there’s nothing better than a bright white road cycling shoe.

Winter cycling shoes are nothing new, but having the option to ride in white winter kicks is almost unheard of. Well, that was it, until this shoe came along. Whether its Gore-Tex membrane is actually any good at repelling water, and whether it’s still comfortable despite the high ankle, we’ll need to wait until the comprehensive review is over to find out.
