An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck an island region in Ecuador and northern Peru on Saturday, causing residents to rush out of buildings. President Guillermo Lasso said the powerful quake had killed at least 12 people. Rescue teams are searching for survivors after some buildings collapsed and cars were smashed, and it was also reported that buildings were damaged after the earthquake. Social media users reported damage to homes and buildings. The epicenter was 29 kilometers (18.02 miles) from the city of Palau in the Guayas province. Authorities said the quake was unlikely to cause a tsunami. State-run oil company Petrocuador said there were no reports of damage to any facilities and that “operations are continuing normally”.
