There is no threat of a tsunami for New Zealand after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and GNS Science assessed that the earthquake near the Kermadec Islands was unlikely to have triggered a tsunami that would have been a threat to New Zealand.

The earthquake occurred at 12:42pm New Zealand time, in the same vicinity as the magnitude 8.1 earthquake that struck on March 4, 2021, and triggered the tsunami evacuation of large parts of the North Island.

NEMA said it was assessing whether the quake could affect New Zealand but gave its standard advice for people to stay away from coastal areas if they feel a prolonged or strong quake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake posed no threat to Hawaii and the broader Pacific Ocean.

A localized possibility of a tsunami passed with no confirmed effect.

The Kermadec Islands are uninhabited except for Raoul Island where New Zealand scientists sometimes stay to conduct meteorological observations or weed control work.

The islands are the site of frequent large earthquakes. It was formed geologically from a ridge that arose from the continuous collision between the Pacific Ocean and the Australian tectonic plates.
