JOHANNESBURG EARTHQUAKE: The quake occurred at 2:38 am (0038 GMT) about 10 kilometers (six miles) below the surface.
Residents across the county posted photos on social media showing minor structural damage to walls.
The emergency services department did not report any casualties or casualties, but said disaster management teams will remain on standby. Johannesburg emergency services spokeswoman Zuleli Kumalo warned residents to “exercise caution in the event of earthquakes, (as) they tend to be more dangerous than the initial earthquake”.
Authorities said the epicenter of the “relatively long” quake was in Boksburg, a small town about 20 kilometers east of Johannesburg. In August 2014, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck a gold mining town near Johannesburg.
