FORT PIERCE, FL – A major explosion off the coast of Florida by the US Navy has sparked speculation about fish deaths and even the collapse of the apartment building in Surfside.

The massive explosion earlier this month, 100 miles off the Florida coast, lit up social media.

“When I saw it, the alarm bells went off in my head,” said Kevin Hinkle, a Fort Pierce resident.

The Navy said the test was for its new aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, but it worried many Florida residents.

“Dolphins are chasing themselves or whales swimming on the beach or something like that. [I] worried that would happen,” Henkel said.

The explosion recorded a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale.

Frederick Shaffer, a building engineer from the Shaffer Group in Stewart, said the blast and shock likely had no effect because buildings in South Florida are built to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes.

“On that basis, a building designed to South Florida standards would have to withstand a typical California earthquake,” Shaffer said.

The killing of fish in Juneau Beach has also been attributed to the change in water temperature, but environmental groups also suggest that the damage to marine life from the explosion may be far in the ocean.

“Even a large animal, like a dolphin, would have a real chance of dying if it was within a kilometer or two of the explosion. And then, going out 10 kilometres, you could have permanent hearing damage for a marine mammal that depends on it,” said Michael Gasny of the Council of Defend the national resource “his ability to listen and be heard.”

The Navy said more blast tests are scheduled this summer off the coast of Florida.
