Other Formula 1 semifinals

Threatened by Sunday rain, the Belgian Grand Prix, won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, was the shortest race in Formula 1 and only sixth since the championship began in 1950 and ended at half a point.

The race was suspended after at least two laps behind the safety car ensured points were awarded.

Here are the details of the other five semifinals:

Malaysia 2009

British Jenson Button won the chaotic Malaysian GP for his second win in two races at the Brawn GP. The race was suspended behind a safety car out of 32 out of 56 scheduled laps due to heavy rain.

AUSTRIA 1991

The race, which ends the season in Adelaide, was won by Brazilian Ayrton Senna, stopping on lap 14 on 81 laps due to heavy rain. Gianni Morbidelli from Italy ended the year with only half a point and had to wait until 1994 to get a full one.

MONACO 1984

The race was suspended in the 31st round for 77 laps due to rain. The winner was Alain Prost from France. He ended up losing half a point that year to Austrian Niki Laud, even though he had won more competitions.

AUSTRIA 1975

Stopped on the 29th of 54 laps in the Oesterreichring due to rain. The late Italian Vittorio Brambilla took the only win of his Formula 1 career and was so excited that he jumped into the hurdles after taking the checkered flag.

SPAIN 1975

The race on Barcelona’s Montjuich track was suspended after 29 laps out of 75 laps when German Rolf Stommelen’s Lola collided with the crowd and killed five spectators. Italian Lella Lombardi finished sixth and was the first female driver to score – although no woman has yet scored points.
