Were the other fans of the Washington national football team mentally drained after defeating the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday? It was one of the most stressful games lately, and it says something if you’ve been following this team all the time.

Among the low lights was Washington, which allowed Cordarre Patterson to make his best Marshall Faulk impression. The former return specialist collected 116 yards from the fight and three touches with just 11 touches.

However, do you know what was lost in the mix due to the heroism of Taylor Heinicken? It would be a shambolic performance by Dustin Hopkins.

Hopkins scored his only field goal, a 21-yard chip in the third quarter, but left two extra points that went up behind Washington by two points after Heinicke connected to Terry McLaurin with TD 3:52 left.

The show once again got fans demanding Washington bring a free agent to some competition. Those prayers were answered on Tuesday when the national football team signed Chris Blewitt for the training set.

It can be stretchy to say that Hopkins will kick out of his job – Ron Rivera is repeated defended the 31-year-old in the midst of controversy – but that may change after another bad performance against the Saints in week 5.

At the rate at which Washington’s defense surrenders points, the attack cannot afford to leave points on the scoreboard. This applies to the whole crime, not just Hopkins. The veteran kicker happens to be in the spotlight, and rightly so, because he was almost directly responsible for the defining defeat of the season.

So what do Washington fans need to know about Blewitt? In addition to becoming a momentary meme (read his name slowly), if he ever lost a big kick, he never actually kicked in an NFL game.

Blewitt was last listed in the Chicago Bears, but he gave up during the 2019 offseason and has since ran a vacant office. Although the 26-year-old has struggled to find an NFL home, he was a star at Pitt University.

After graduating, Blewitt was the Panthers ’all-time leader in field goals and extra points. During the four Pitt years, he scored 97.1% of his extra points (198/204). His field goal the numbers are not large (69.6% in total), but this is due to the weak junior and senior season. As a first-year and second-year student, Blewitt drilled FGs at an impressive 77%.

Again, it is unlikely that Blewitt will seek to oust Hopkins. This is the second time this season that Washington has signed a kicking team. For the first time, it meant nothing significant. In early September, they signed Eddy Pineiro, but released him a week later.

Maybe Rivera will adopt a “three strikes and you’re gone” approach with Hopkins? In other words, maybe Washington will sign a higher profile propeller that can really compete for the job the next time he swings his bag?

In any case, this move should send a clear message to Hopkins that Washington is not afraid to look for possible substitutes – or in this case reinforcements – if he continues to put his team at a disadvantage.
