Fields passed a gala dinner whose parents went alone and decided to stay home with their dog Uno to study the tape in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Raiders in Las Vegas.
“Of course it’s worth celebrating, but I’m not just unhappy with where I am,” Fields said. “I’m going to keep growing, healing and I’m just trying to work hard every day to make good gains on Sundays.”
One of the main reasons why Bears won the fields as a beginner was the growing growth he has made since he first stepped onto the practice field.
“I feel like I’ve grown up in almost every area,” Fields said. “Usually when I make a mistake in a game or make a mistake in practice, I just try to focus on these things every day and just get better. I try to improve every aspect of defense. Ball out of my hands, drops, timing, stuff like that; I just try to grow in all areas.”
The Bears loved the flexibility shown by Fields in leading the team to victory over the Lions a week after the disappointment to the Browns. Discussing how defeat provided motivation, Fields told reporters that he loves adversity “because it just brings a whole other person out of me.”
“There are a lot of guys who might not have come back for it,” said coach Matt Nagy. “It was hard, but it just shows who he is. We all just know and see what he’s all about, and then that trust. Justin has earned that trust with us.”
Fields was the ultimate two-threat quarterback in the state of Ohio, and he has continued to make punching games with his arms and legs early in his NFL career. At the same touchdown station against Lions, Fields completed a 64-yard pass to Darnell Mooney and took the second first down at his 4.4-Speed, jumping around his right head 11 yards in third and four.
“You never want to lose what he has at this speed,” Nagy said. “You never want to lose what he has with this ability. The third downward turn we had last week when he ran around and won safety around the edge is a lot. [of players] who cannot do it in the position of defender.
“And there are things we can do schematically that emphasize defense in our game design and what we do. At the same time, Justin is the first to say he wants to be the bestplaymakerthat he can be. “
Fields ’arm talent was on display compared to Detroit when he made 64 and 32 yards for Mooney and 28 and 27 yards for Allen Robinson II. The Bears ’longest passing game during the first three games this season was 21 yards.
His development work as Bears ’first quarterback continues, Fields knows that there will inevitably be bumps in the road. But he also intends to benefit from the experience he has gained.
“You just have to understand that mistakes are made,” Fields said. “You just have to learn from these mistakes and try not to make those mistakes twice. So after every look I get, I see what I could have done better.”
