EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The national 12th-ranked University of Michigan men’s cross-country team fought for third place on Friday (November 12) in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Competition at the Angel Mounds Historic Site, which advanced back and forth for half an hour.

Entering fourth in much of the late stages of the 10-mile race around the ancient indigenous cultural site of the Angel Mounds, the Wolverines managed to rise to third place on the final mile, overtaking the Big East. champion Butler and restraining the hard effort of the Michigan State team.

Michigan scored 106 points behind the All-Region rankings in 13th place Devin Meyrer, 16th place Tom Brady and 22nd place Joost Plaetinck, just 110 points from Michigan State and 116 points from Butler.

Zach Stewart surpassed the top 25 honors in the entire region by one place in 26th place Nick Foster ran 29th in his best race of the season at the right time.

Wolverines were unable to catch the Big Ten championship and second-place Wisconsin, which scored 87 points, to get an automatic seat in next Saturday’s NCAA Championships in Florida State. ACC champion Notre Dame won the regional championship with 37 points.

The top two teams in the nine NCAA Regional Championships running on Friday will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships in Florida State next Saturday (November 20th). All other teams, including Michigan, are now awaiting an extensive selection process for the remaining 13 seats to Tallahassee.

The NCAA Selection Show will be broadcast live on Saturday (November 13) at 5:00 PM at NCAA.com. Michigan is well positioned to qualify for high-profile performances at numerous competing regular season events throughout the fall.

This was the first 10-mile race of the season for everyone involved, and with the NCAA championship seats on the line, the race took a long time to develop. Michigan bounced between second and fourth in the first half of the race as almost all the players on the field ran in one big package.

Wolverines took second place in the six-kilometer division with Plaetinck (eighth), Brady (10th) and Meyrer (15th), all of whom ran alongside Notre Dame, making a decisive move to the front that started. compete seriously.

Meyrer strengthened his position at the front of the ever-expanding package as the pace slowed by a 7.1-t split, but Wolverines dropped slightly to third as the team organized themselves.

Wolverines remained strong over the next mile as Meyrer and Brady held tight in the top 20 and Plaetinck took a five-point rise to 21st. Michigan began to lose touch with the top two on the team table, with Butler just two points behind, 114-116.

Butler moved past Wolverines in less than a mile, 109-112, but Michigan had the answer in the last mile.

Meyrer, Brady and Foster rose a total of nine places in the final minutes, and Foster picked up five of those places alone. This combined effort was enough to overtake the fading Butler team and keep the Michigan State team, cutting 22 points from their points in the final division.
