Voters did not want to divide the captain in the white ball cricket, says Sourav Ganguly

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has said voters did not want to split the captain’s post in ODI and T20I format between Virat Kohl and Rohit Sharman. Ganguly also revealed that the government and voters had asked Kohl to reconsider his decision to resign as captain of the T20I, but Kohli refused.

Kohli has already resigned as captain of the T20I and IPL in September. In his last tournaments as skipper, Royal Challengers Bangalore finished third in the series IPL 2021. In the T20 World Cup in the UAE, India did not make it to the semi-finals as it had lost to Pakistan and New Zealand in the first two games. The 33-year-old remained ODI and test captain after the show event.

On Wednesday, the Selection Board removed Kohl from the position of ODI captain and appointed Rohit Sharma as skipper. Meanwhile, Ganguly said the reluctance of the right-hander to continue as captain of the T20I led to a change in the 50-year-old captain’s position because voters did not want to divide the captain.

“The government and the electorate had asked Virat to reconsider his decision to leave the captain of the T20. He had refused the proposal at the time. Sourav Ganguly told TOI on Thursday.

The former Indian skipper added that the team needed one vision as the team will play two ICC tournaments, namely the T20 World Cup in 2022 and the Cricket World Cup in 2023.

The BCCI President further added that he and Chetan Sharma, Chairman of the Selection Committee, spoke with Kohl and explained their views.
