Game Summary: Soccer
The game belonged to Tagovailo, the transfer to Alabama, and Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailo’s younger brother. He threw 265 yards and two TD assists raised his season to a total of 26, tying Maryland’s one-season record.
The MVP of the game, Tagovailoa, helped Terrapins (7-6) get better than the Hokies at Yankee Stadium. In the second quarter, Tagovailoa joined Jones in a deep game and a 14-3 lead.
Tagovailo hit Jones again in the third quarter with a 34-10 lead, helping Terps win the first bowl since 2010.
Jones, a senior wide striker, had never received a touchdown pass in his first 40 games. He had two and got 111 yards against Hokies (6-7).
Antwain Littleton II added a 4-yard TD to Maryland and Joseph Petrino responded to Hokie’s only touchdown with a 44-yard goal with 59 seconds left in the first half to lead 24-10. Roman Hemby scored 2 yards in the third quarter.
Hockey’s own track, Enter Sandman – played before the game – the Metallica classic was usually played late in the game at Yankee Stadium – and it made fans and players jump on another cool day at Pinstripe Bowl.
Terrapins never gave up and played just like a team that lost six out of seven at a time. Virginia Tech QB Connor Blumrick grabbed the fourth quarter and Greg Rose was horrified by the loose ball and ran 11 yards to the touch and a 47-10 lead.
Coby McDonald capped scoring with a 20-yard run that made the score 54-10 and ended coach Mike Locksley’s first bowl win in seven seasons and two programs.
GO BOWLING
Five bowl games had been wiped out due to COVID-19 before the Pinstripe Bowl, and other bowls had to replace teams for the same reason. New York Yankees President Randy Levine praised Virginia Tech and Maryland for being “very careful” about their health practices.
YANKEE CONNECTION
The Hokies have a special bond with the Yankees following a April 16, 2007 shooting at the Virginia Tech campus that killed 32 people. The Yankees donated $ 1 million to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund and continued the following season with an exhibition match against Virginia Tech on the Blacksburg campus. The Yankees wore Hockey Orange and Maroon Caps, the NY logo on the front and the VT logo on the side.
The hockey returned to service in the Pinstripe Bowl and wore a lockable “NY” on their helmets.
The Pinstripe Bowl winner will receive the George M. Steinbrenner Trophy.
