Niesenbaum advances to the semifinals of the Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. Senior Jonah Niesenbaum advanced to the heavyweight quarterfinals after a 3-0 victory on the opening day of the 2023 Southern Scuffle. The second day’s weigh-ins start at 9 a.m. and these semifinals at 1 p.m

HOW DID IT HAPPEN

• Niesenbaum overcame convincing opponents from Little Rock and Bucknell to face Oklahoma State’s Konner Doucet in the heavyweight quarterfinals.
• Niesenbaum defeated Doucet by a 3-2 decision to advance to the semifinals and face Binghamton’s Cory Day on the second day of the tournament.
• Redshirt senior Brayden Ray and a redshirt junior Patrick Rowland both competed in the consolation quarterfinals at 197 and 149, but fell to their opponents.
• Consul of Cajetan, Conor Becker, Luke Chakonis and Vincent Baker also earned wins for the Blue Devils and each finished the day 1-2.
• Duke finished the first day with 18.5 points, tied for 18th with the University of Virginia.

NEXT

After wrapping up the competition at the Southern Scuffle on Monday, Duke will return to the mat for a home game against Central Michigan on Thursday, January 19.
