The PMHS field hockey team is headed to the state championships in Buffalo for the second year in a row after the Beekmantown Eagles posted a dominant 5-2 win in their regional game on Saturday.
Pelham will play in the state championship semifinals against the Saranac Chiefs at 9 a.m. Saturday at the LECOM Harborcenter. If the Pelicans win, they will advance to the state finals and face the winner of the Skaneateles-Salmon River game.
On Saturday, Pelham got on the scoreboard first after a slow first period. Sophomore Reid Finster got the ball rolling for the Pelicans, scoring at 14:58 of the second period. Beekmantown responded with two goals of their own, finishing the second for a 2-1 lead.
Pelham came back full force in the third when senior Chris Franchini tied the game with 13:17 left. Finster then scored his second goal of the night, giving the Pelicans a 3-2 lead with 10:11 left in the game. Senior captain Luke Green sealed the victory, scoring twice in the final two minutes to cap Pelham’s dominating victory.
The Pelicans entered the season as something of an underdog, having lost state MVP Louie Marcellino as well as star Eric Elbery to prep schools. The departure of these key players and the retirement of legendary head coach Ed Witz meant the team had everything to prove this year.
Pelham hopes to keep their momentum going as they head to state and can bring home a state championship for the second year in a row. It would be the first-ever back-to-back state championships for PMHS hockey.
