Philippine table tennis team at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games. TAKE A PICTURE
MANILA, Philippines Philippine table tennis showed it is headed in the right direction as the national teams finished strongly at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Richard Gonzales and John Russel Misal won bronze for the Philippines in men’s doubles. They only dropped their semi-final match to world-ranked and eventual gold medalists Izaac Quec and Singapore’s Koen Pang.
Kheith Rhynne Cruz also competed in women’s singles and women’s doubles with RJ Fadoli and in the women’s team with Fadoli, Angel Laude, Emy Rose Dael and Muse Balatbat.
Laude also teamed up with Edouard Valenet in mixed doubles.
In addition to the bronze medal, we competed in four events, some of which reached the quarter-finals and were close to the medal, as most were even matches. We are in the right direction and we will strive harder to produce more medals in the future, said Philippine Table Tennis Federation Inc. President Ting Ledesma.
The PTTF thanked the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee, Abet Reyes of Prottec and Bill Yap of Huaching Foundation for their support.
The table tennis teams for the SEA Games delegation were formed at the national selection held in Puerto Princesa last March and went through rigorous training leading up to the SEA Games.
After the SEA Games, Ledesma said that the association is now preparing for the countries’ participation in the Southeast Asian Table Tennis Association (SEATTA) junior tournament next month.
