Lauren Long walked the North Central High School field to meet South Bend St. Joseph Molly Bellia at the IHSAA Girls Tennis Individual Doubles State Championship on Saturday. Park Tudor junior lost only once during the regular season by chance to Bellia. On a hot June afternoon, Long pushed himself to the border, but that wasn’t enough to bring a state certificate when Bell defeated Long 6-4, 6-3.
It was an exhausting match with temperatures in the 90s. Both Long and Bellia looked exhausted, but pressed forward. They trained and worked throughout the year to find out, especially with Long, the training to work for his weaknesses from the first meeting against Bellia.

I tried to take advantage of what I had won for the first time, Long said after the match. Molly played really well, so unfortunately it didn’t work this time.
In her first year, Bellia ended the season unbeaten. Playing an invincible opponent can be a daunting task, but Long felt the season was going well for Bellia despite his losses.
It was definitely better than the freshman season and although it improved tremendously, Long said.
Long estimated his championship to 7/10. The high heat created difficult playing conditions that affected the performance of both athletes. Long noted conditions made it difficult to move.
The heat made it really difficult today, so my movement was not as good as I wanted it to be, said exhausted Long after the match. But Molly played really well, so I couldn’t do much.
The Evansville pair wins the double title
Abby Myers and Margo Throop return to Evansville as heads of state.
Memorial Girls Tennis Court No. 1 double duo won a state title with three decrees from Delta Tynan Dishman and Maggie Manor. After dropping the first set 3-6, they gathered to get 7-6 and 6-1 to win the domestic championship.
The senior duo was able to finish their high school tennis career in style at the end of the season with a 26-1 record as a duo. They finished perfectly 9-0 at the end of the season.
Myers and Throop got things started with a straight quarter-final win against Layne Burke and Lily Meyer of New Albany with a final score of 6-1, 6-3. They then continued their hot performance on Saturday’s semi-final round by beating 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) Hamilton Southeastern’s Misha Bukkasagaram and Emily Orme.
In 2019, Myers and Throop were state runners. They lost in the championship match to Carmen duos Lauren Littell and Leila Antony.
The Tigers advanced to the state finals as a team, but lost a tough 3-2 match to South Bend St.Joseph in the early round of the tournament. It was the only loss Memorial suffered throughout the season.
