England Hockey and Great Britain Hockey have unfortunately announced that Emily Defroand is withdrawing from international hockey.
Emily, who has suffered a number of serious injuries in recent years, has made the difficult decision to abandon the UK’s centralized program for her long-term health and well-being.
The bronze medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games has made the decision with the full support of the medical team and all those involved in hockey in the UK.
Emily said: It has been an absolute honor to be represented in the UK and England over the last four and a half years. At the age of 26, this is not a decision I thought I would make, nor a decision I have taken lightly, but when I push my body to the limit, I know this is the right decision.
I am so proud to have been a part of this lineup and what we have achieved on the field, as well as the adversities we have overcome. I am forever grateful to my teammates, our support staff and everyone involved in Great Britain Hockey for making this such a wonderful chapter in my life.
Emily made her international debut in England on February 25, 2017, before pulling her GB shirt against Argentina for the first time 10. February 2018. He made a total of 55 international appearances (36 in England, 19 in the UK) and won three bronze medals in England.
Her involvement in top sports isn’t going to end there, though Emily will soon start working in the communications department at the heart-hearted club West Ham United FC.
Ed Barney, UK Hockeys performance director, said: Emily is heavy-hearted apart from international hockey, but it’s a decision we know is well thought out and ultimately right for her.
Over the past four and a half years, Emily has brought an enviable passion, dedication, and commitment to everything she has done. His bubbly and perky character has been appreciated by both players and staff.
With her commitment to double standards, Emily is a great light for all her sporting ages. It’s great to see such a seamless transition to a great role and where he should be proud of. Emily has set fantastic standards both on and off the field and leaves a real legacy in the work on equality, diversity and inclusion, and I hope we will continue to work closely with her for years to come.
England and UK women head coach Mark Hager added: Emilys ’commitment to the UK and UK teams is greatly lacking. Not only did Emily drive standards on and off the field, but she was also a versatile player who left no stone unturned in her excellence.
Emily was a player who was able to read the match and change the pace of the game with her ability to win possession under pressure and turn the pace in her favor for her efforts to compete in any competition.
The laughter Emily bought was contagious, and I know the staff and her teammates miss her. the staff and players appreciated his ability to bring the group together.
I can’t thank Emily enough for her commitment to the program and I wish her much success in her new adventures.
