Tennis players no longer accept strict quarantine for the Australian Open: Tiley

(Reuters) – Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said players do not want to go to a two-week hotel quarantine before next year’s Grand Slam, but he is confident the tournament is on schedule.

All players who entered the tournament earlier than this year in Australia had to be quarantined for 14 days before they were allowed to play, and these requirements, designed to keep the new coronavirus out of the country, remain in place.

Tiley said the tennis players had played in tournaments in other countries without such strict restrictions and required them to be strictly quarantined before the next Australian Open in January.

Whether the band approves or not, it’s still to be seen, he told Melbournes 3AW radio on Wednesday.

At this point, in our first conversations with them, it’s not something they’re open to, simply because it’s not what they’re currently doing around the world.

If the conditions are today, we may not be able to get players to accept them.

The Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and MotoGP tours, both scheduled to take place in the state of Victoria, were canceled on Tuesday for the second year in a row due to logistical problems caused by border controls.

Victorias Sports Minister Martin Pakula said on Tuesday he was convinced that the introduction of vaccines in the countries, which has been one of the slowest in developed countries, would accelerate to such an extent that the Grand Slam would not be affected by the restrictions.

I am very sure that the Australian Open will continue, Pakula said.

Tiley said the business trips had agreed to postpone agreeing on 2022 schedules until the end of September so that Australian open organizers would get notice from the government of what admission requirements might be in January.
