Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana, Executive Director of National Innovation Agency, Thailand (Public Organization) or NIA, said that since 2020, NIA has merged 2 major national events, STARTUP THAILAND and INNOVATION THAILAND EXPO. This was a significant move to bring together leading Thai startups and innovators to create a virtual world for innovation, the first of its kind in the country. This initiative aimed to drive transformation, help the country emerge from the COVID-19 crisis and change the paradigm in creating innovations to cope with crises.

In 2021, the Startup x Innovation Thailand Expo (SITE) focused on promoting, developing and creating growth opportunities in Deep Tech, strongly believing that Deep Tech would be a crucial weapon to further innovate and drive technology, pushing Thailand to compete with the world’s leading countries.

Even though the COVID-19 situation started to ease in 2022, there was still no full confidence in the recovery. SITE has started making connections, connecting innovators from Thailand and around the world, once again fostering interactions to prepare for post-COVID reopening.

“Since the SITE 2022 event, we have witnessed the continued and diverse growth of Thailand’s innovation potential. The success of SITE 2022 has helped boost Thailand’s ecosystem, becoming more and more suitable for investment in innovation. We have noticed that almost all organizations are increasingly engaging in deep tech business, and Bangkok has transformed into a city that attracts foreigners to set up businesses, becoming the world’s second most popular destination for digital nomads,” added Dr. Pun-Arj.

Also important is the awakening of universities with incubation units and the establishment of funds to promote startups. There has been a push for more laws and regulations that make it easier to run startup businesses, and startup investment remains consistently buoyant.

In the past, there has been a push for government procurement resulting in improved public services. Both independent investors and large companies are investing in startups to attract international investment. Finally, there has been a push to promote the enactment of a law to promote startups.

“Under the uncertainty, one change we want to see in Thai society is the development of an ‘Innovation Mindset’. This represents an open attitude to innovation, ready to welcome challenges and changes, and seek new opportunities and partnerships to create solutions through the innovation.

Additionally, accelerating transformation to expand the use and impact of innovation is crucial. This mentality must be cultivated and instilled in organizations and personnel, in the government, private, civil society and public sectors. The goal is for Thai society to become a community that is open to innovation and ready for future changes, eventually working together to make a difference in the world,” said Dr. Pun-Arj.

Thus, this year’s SITE is a return to the full-fledged event format, marking the return of the largest technology conference in Southeast Asia and the largest innovation event of the year. It brings together a mix of new entrepreneurs from the older and younger generations, innovation gurus from around the world, innovators, investors and public and private sectors under the concept of “INNOVATION PARTNERSHIP – TOGETHER WE GROW”. The goal is to create an “Innovation Partnership” to lead Thailand towards an innovative future. It represents a significant collaboration in innovation between 4 sectors: the government, the private sector, the education sector and civil society, to support the growth of innovative startups and enterprises, strengthen the Thai innovation ecosystem and propel Thailand to become an innovation-driven nation.
