Director Kevin Smith shot at disgruntled He-Man fans by joking that his upcoming Clerks sequel will feature an important character death.
Pop culture geek and ClerksIII director Kevin Smith delivered an ironic blow to disappointed fans of his Masters of the Universe series currently airing on Netflix. Smith first rose to prominence in 1994 when he won the Filmmakers Trophy at the Sundance Film Festival with his first black-and-white comedyClerks. In addition to his feature length films View Askewniverse, all of which feature appearances by iconic duo Jay and Silent Bob, Smith has also lent his talents to comic book writing, podcasting, stand-up comedy, and animation. .
In 2019, Smith announced that he would direct a new Masters of the Universe animated series designed as a direct sequel to the original 1980s cartoon. The first half of the Smiths series, dubbed Masters of Universe: Revelation, was released recently on Netflix, as the second half of the season has yet to receive an official release date. While the first five episodes went well with critics, the series saw a bombardment of reviews from fans disappointed with the controversial decision to apparently kill He-Mans’ character in the first episode and focus on the character of Teelas instead.

Currently preparing to begin filming for the long-awaited trio of his debut film Clerks, Smith seems more than aware of the backlash his Masters of the Universe series has generated. Speaking to Twitter, Smith suggested that the film could kill Brian OHallorans character Dante Hicks in the first act because his storytelling senses tell me audiences universally love this trope. Check out the hilarious tweet below:
I’ll be 51 in a week from today, as we start shooting CLERKS III. But at noon, the cast reads the script aloud for the first time! Wait for @BrianCOHalloran to find out we killed his character in Act 1! My sense of storytelling tells me that audiences universally love this trope… pic.twitter.com/0Pd5GxeaLN

Meanwhile, Smith’s attention is now firmly fixed on the delivery of the third entry in his Clerks trilogy, going back to its roots and filming it entirely in her hometown of New Jersey. Original stars Jason Mewes (Jay), Jeff Anderson (Randal), Brian O’Halloran (Dante), as well as Ahsokas Rosario Dawson, who will reprise his role from the sequel, Becky, return alongside Silent Bob for the film. Filming for Clerks III is slated to begin next week.
With his films often stuffed with self-referential and demeaning humor, Smith shows that he doesn’t take the criticism he receives too seriously. Although he has previously indicated that He-Man does indeed appear strongly in the second half of the series, he has confirmed that he did not intentionally seek to provoke fans or upset anyone and is a bit baffled by some of the accusations leveled at him. Nonetheless, Smith is no stranger to fan controversy and appears to be picking up on the backlash while working on Clerks III.
