Olivia Rodrigo Responds to Critics Behind Writing Song on “Sour”

Some of the biggest pop moments of 2021 came from Olivia Rodrigo, her debut single “Drivers License” and her chart-topping debut album, Sour. But she also faces negative reactions. Many listeners felt that some of the young singer’s songs sounded too similar to those of other artists. And when artists like Taylor Swift and Paramore received writing credits, they accused her of ripping off their work. In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Rodrigo responded to the reviews.

I think it’s disappointing to see people take things out of context and discredit the work of a young woman, Rodrigo told the publication. “But at the end of the day I’m really proud and happy to say that my job is to be a songwriter. All music is inspired by each other. Rodrigo added,“ Obviously I write d ‘first all my words of my heart and my life. I made up the lyrics and melody for Good 4 U one morning in the shower.

She continued: What’s so beautiful about music is that it can be so inspired by the music of the past. Each artist is inspired by artists who came before him. It’s kind of a fun and beautiful sharing process. Nothing in music is ever new. There are four chords in each song. This is the fun part – trying to make it your own.

After Sour’s release, Rodrigo credited Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Joshua Farro on “Good 4 U” due to its similarities to the group’s 2008 track, “Misery Business.” Taylor Swift received two credits on the album, first on “Deju Vu” and then on “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” for their similarities to “Cruel Summer” and “New Year’s Day” respectively by Swift.
