Louis CK and Marilyn Manson win Grammy nominations after allegations of misconduct

Louis CK, Marilyn Manson, Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart all received Grammy nominations on Tuesday, prompting some on social media to question the existence of the so-called cancellation culture.

The four nominees, who have been labeled by some as victims of the culture cancellation, have drawn backlash in recent years over various controversies.

In 2017, CK admitted to having committed sexual misconduct. The comedian, who continued to shoot a year after the allegations first appeared, also sparked outrage after mocking Parkland survivors in a stand-up routine in 2018.

CK has not been charged with any crime related to his sexual misconduct.

He received a nomination for Best Comedy Album for his most recent special, “Sincerely Louis CK”, in which he joked about his sexual misconduct.

Manson, real name Brian Warner, faces sexual assault lawsuits from several women, including “Game of Thrones” actress Esmé Bianco, who filed a lawsuit in April against Manson alleging he had committed several violent sexual assaults, rape and other abuses from 2009 to 2013.

Manson has not been charged with any crime related to the alleged incidents. A representative of the gothic singer has repeatedly denied all accusations of sexual assault.

In February, Manson responded to allegations of abuse brought against him at the time by his ex-partner Evan Rachel Wood. He wrote in an Instagram post: “My art and my life have long been controversial magnets, but these recent claims about me are horrendous distortions of reality. My intimate relationships have always been entirely consensual with like-minded partners. No matter how – and why – others now choose to distort the past, it is the truth. “

He is nominated for his work on Kanye West’s “Donda”. In August, West stunned fans on one of his listening parties after inviting Manson on stage with him.

Chappelle is nominated alongside Amir Sulaiman for Best Spoken Word Album for “8:46”.

The comedian came under fire in October after the release of his most recent Netflix special, “The Closer,” which employees and their Netflix allies said included both transphobic and homophobic content.

Many Netflix employees have left the company’s Los Angeles headquarters to protest the continued streaming of the special. Company CEO Ted Sarandos has stood firm with Chappelle, but he said on Oct. 19 that “I fucked up” when it comes to communicating with employees who are really hurt by Chappelle’s comments.

In a video posted to her Instagram following the backlash, Chappelle responded to criticism for her Netflix special.

He ended the video by suggesting that it had not yet been completely “canceled”.

“You have to answer the question, ‘Am I canceled or not?’ “, did he declare. The crowd shouted, “No. “

“So let’s go,” Chappelle said. “Thank you very much and good night. ”

Hart stepped down from hosting the 2019 Oscars after some of his old tweets and jokes, which some at the time called homophobic, resurfaced.

“I made the choice to withdraw from the organization of the Oscars this year. … It’s because I don’t want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists, ”he tweeted in 2018.“ I sincerely apologize to the community LGBTQ for my insensitive words from my past. “

Hart, who is nominated for Best Comedy Album for “Zero F *** s Given,” recently defended Chappelle, whom he called his brother, in an interview with the New York Times published Tuesday.

“This man doesn’t have a hateful bone in his body,” he told the publication. “And I’m not saying this because it’s hypothetical – I’m saying this because I know him. I know his world. I know he embraces the LGBT + community because he has close friends of him in that community. I know his kids understand equality, fair treatment, love. I know his wife incorporates that into their kids. I know why people kiss him. He’s a good guy. “

Some on social media have shared negative responses to the news of the appointments.

“Lous CK, Kevin Hart and Dave Chappelle were all Grammy nominees?” Adrienne Lawrence, legal analyst, tweeted. “If it’s ‘cancel culture,’ all actresses I know get canceled instead of just being underpaid and unrecognized.” “Louis CK, Dave Chappelle, Kanye, DaBaby and Marilyn Manson all nominated for the Grammys today. Culture ‘to be real,’ wrote Jillian Sederholm.

“only one grammy name each for Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart and Louis CK !! call off culture strikes again !!” David Mack joked.

The Recording Academy did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment regarding the reaction.

The 64th Grammy Awards will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on January 31, 2022.

Dennis Romero, Wilson Wong and Diana Dasrath contributed to it.
