Well, Amna, sometimes I want to delete my Twitter account. In fact, I’ve started self-censoring because as soon as I tweet even one word, the kind of responses I get are nauseating.
My image was mocked on a porn video and circulated nationwide. My phone number was leaked on social media. My address has been published. Burned copies of my book were sent to my residence.
One of India’s leading journalists, Gauri Lankesh, was shot dead in 2017 for being shot – allegedly by Hindu nationalists. Even today, we don’t know who killed her. And I remember two days before she was shot I remember her calling me and telling me about the hate online against me saying they are paper tigers . They don’t attack.
And yet, two days later, she was shot. So there’s – I mean, whether it’s online, whether it’s offline, I feel like it’s relentless. And the only purpose is to silence us into submission and prevent us from telling the truth.
