Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of civil rights leaders Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, has championed a new monument that honors his parents following criticism of the recently unveiled sculpture.
The monument, which is called ‘The Embrace’, depicts the embrace shared by Dr King and Coretta Scott King after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The $10 million bronze sculpture, designed by Hank Willis Thomas and MASS Design Group, has garnered mixed reactions since its unveiling last week at Boston Common.

King III told CNN’s Don Lemon, which marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on Monday that he thinks “the artist has done a great job,” despite criticism that the monument only depicts the arms disembodied from his parents.
“I’m satisfied,” King III said. “Yes, there weren’t the images of my mother and my father, but it represents something that brings people together. And in our time, where there are so many divisions, we need symbols that speak of bring us together.”
King III also said he was “moved” by the artwork.
“It’s personal to me,” King III added, noting that if his parents had never met in Boston, “maybe I wouldn’t be here. So I’m thankful, number one, that he talks about the love story.”
King III concluded by telling Lemon that he was happy the monument depicted his mother.
“A lot of monuments are built just around dad,” he said. “But it represents the kind of relationship they had working together, and they were a partnership.”
Others close to Dr. King and Coretta Scott King were not so kind in their assessments.
Seneca Scott, a cousin of Coretta Scott King, shared her dislike of the statue with multiple outlets, going so far as to say “melt it down” on Twitter.
“I still can’t understand how they tried to mess with my family,” Scott wrote in another tweet.
