Voice actress Lily Gao responds to criticism of her Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Lily Gao, the voice actor behind Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Ada Wong, has hit back at the critics in a new Instagram post.

The actress deactivated her account earlier this month following thousands of vitriolic messages complaining about her performance and claiming she “ruined the remake”.

“My Ada is a survivor,” Gao said in the new post, which also included footage of Asian women in film that inspired her take on the character.

Gao is the first Asian actor to play the Chinese-American character (outside of Japan), who first appeared in Resident Evil 2 in 1998.

“Being the first Asian actor to portray Ada in Resident Evil video games is an honor, and I will always be grateful to our producer and director for making the decision for an authentic portrayal,” Gao said.

“It’s a shame that with the game’s release, the all-too-familiar feeling of ‘I don’t belong’ also came. While reviews are expected, this isn’t the first time an actor of color has faces racist and gender-based harassment simply for participating. Inauthentic The cast perpetuates an unhealthy image that further dehumanizes the community they seek to reflect.”

Gao then criticized Asian stereotypes and described her own performance as Ada.

“It’s time we stop capitalizing solely on the sexualized, eroticized, and mysterious Asian woman, and make room to honor every type of Asian woman,” she said.

“My Ada is a survivor. She’s kind, fair, smart and funny. She’s unpredictable, resilient and definitely not a stereotype.”

Ada’s authentic portrayal is just one of many updates to the remake, which Aoife described as “as good as remakes get” in her Resident Evil 4 Remake review.

However, an update over the weekend was added in microtransactions two weeks after the game was released. This allows players to pay for exclusive weapon upgrades.
