Philadelphia –Temple women’s tennis player Jamie Wei she was honored for her academic and athletic performance when she was selected as a 2022-23 PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Women’s Tennis Player. The team is nominated and voted on by the sports information offices of the 30-area institution in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

To be eligible for the academic all-around award, an athlete must be at least a sophomore at the institution and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.

This is Wei’s first nod to the entire district’s academic team since he and his partner Maiko Uchijima earned a spot on the 2023 AAC All-Conference team and a trip to the NCAA Regionals. The duo finished 28-3 overall on the season, including 14-2 from the first position in duals. Wei and Uchijima gained national recognition early in the season by earning an ITA ranking of No. 5. Overall, the sophomore team earned 15 doubles wins, second most in a single season in school history. In addition, Wei went 21-4 in singles play, including 14-2 in singles play, tied for the second-most singles wins in a single season in school history. He was perfect at first, 5-0 and 1-0 at third, but spent most of the year at second, going 8-2.

In April, Chaiyi, a native of Taiwan, was named the recipient of the NCAA Women’s Enhancement Graduate Scholarship. Honors are awarded to students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 in their final season of NCAA athletic eligibility. Wei graduated with a degree in psychology and is currently working in sports business.

Joining Wei on this year’s academic women’s tennis team are Sarah Ahrens (Rutgers-Camden), Ellie Esterowitz (Haverford), Noelle Frenzel (Thomas Jefferson), Nele Haag (Chestnut Hill) and Nicole Hrbkova (Gwynedd Mercy).
